Simple Present

Use the Simple Present to talk about something we always (or never) do.

I always eat meat for dinner.

They never play basketball on Sundays.

Adding S or ES

We add S or ES to the end of the word when we have a third-person singular pronoun (he, she, it) and the sentence is affirmative.

He likes to eat chicken for lunch.

Anne goes to the mall at night.

Interrogative and Negative Sentences

In the Simple Present you have to use the auxiliary verbs DO and DOES to ask a question. And to make a negative sentence, use DON’T and DOESN’T.

Let’s see an example with the verb WORK.

AFFIRMATIVE	NEGATIVE	INTERROGATIVE

I work at night.	I don’t work at night.	Do I work at night? We usually don’t ask questions to ourselves, but it would be correct.
He works at night.	He doesn’t work at night.	Does he work at night?
She works at night.	She doesn’t work at night.	Does she work at night?
It works at night.	It doesn’t work at night.	Does it work at night?
We work at night.	We don’t work at night.	Do we work at night?
You work at night.	You don’t work at night.	Do you work at night?
They work at night.	They don’t work at night.	Do they work at night?

When using DOES or DOESN’T don’t add S or ES to the verb. That’s why we say “she doesn’t work” besides “she doesn’t works” or “does he work?” besides “does he works?”

When a verb ends in consonant + Y then Y changes to -IES.

Study – studies (She studies English)

*** But when the word ends in a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) + Y then just add S.

Play – plays (He plays soccer on Tuesday)

When the verbs end in “s”, “sh”, “ch”, “x” e “o”, add ED

Watch – Watches (He watches TV every day)

Fix – Fixes (My husband fixes everything in our house)

DO – main verb and auxiliary verb.

Don’t forget that Do can be a verb and an auxiliary verb.
